Cerebral Palsy Program
The Lotus 7 Yoga and Pilates community is coming together around a very exciting new initiative.
The L7 Summer program of wellness will be providing wellness treatments for children and teenagers with CP and their caretakers. All of our practitioners are volunteering their time and all fund raising activity will go straight to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
Gabrielle is our acupuncturist's daughter. She has touched and inspired the hearts of our staff and is therefore our driving force because we have been able to see the positive improvements in her day-to-day life from receiving holistic treatments such as acupuncture. We hope to make this an accessible opportunity for all people with CP and a way to improve their quality of life and to show gratitude for their caretakers for all they do.
Mission of ‘Gabrielle’s Dream’: To meet the needs of patients from preschool age to high school by offering them integrative and complementary therapies to increase their quality of life.
What is Cerebral palsy? Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a condition that affects thousands of babies and children each year. It is not contagious. The word cerebral means having to do with the brain. The word palsy means a weakness or problem in the way a person moves or how he/she positions his/her body. No one knows for sure what causes cerebral palsy. For some babies, injuries to the brain can happen during or soon after birth and this sometimes causes CP. Small, premature babies (babies who are born many weeks before completion of 9 months in their mothers’ womb) or babies who need to be on a ventilator (a machine to help with breathing) for several weeks or more are most at risk for developing CP. But for most children, the problem in the brain occurs before the baby is born, and we don’t know why. CP is not a single condition; rather it describes a wide range of physical and developmental problems that can follow damage to a child's developing brain. People with CP can have problems with control of movement, muscle tone, weakness, reflexes and balance. There may also be additional medical and cognitive difficulties that are associated with damage to the brain. Other symptoms may include swallowing disorders, seizures, constipation, excessive drooling and learning disabilities. There are different types of cerebral palsy. Depending on the pattern of how the body is affected, a person might have quadriplegia, diplegia, triplegia, or hemiplegia. They may be spastic, dystonic, athetotic, or have other types of hyperkinesias.
